Our Mission is to Provide Resources and Opportunities
That Engage, Develop and Inspire Human Resource Professionals
August 2016
NHRC PresidentEvery year it amazes me how quickly the summer seems to fly by.  I hope all of you had the opportunity to take a wonderful vacation or simply enjoy some of the events offered throughout Chicagoland.

Since the month of August is typically a quiet month for the NHRC, it is a good time to reflect on what we have accomplished and what we can look forward to for the remainder of the year.  We have brought in dynamic speakers aimed at both personal and professional growth and even launched our first NHRC webinar earlier this month.  A sincere thank you to those that organized the webinar and to those that participated and provided feedback.

We have heard your input on the importance of legal updates, so our September 8th Professional Development Event will be a half day legal update.   There's still time to register!

Perhaps it is because I have a child whose favorite part of starting school is getting and organizing her new school supplies, I always think August is a time to get myself a little organized and make sure I am on target for meeting my goals for the year.  The NHRC's mission is to Provide Resources and Opportunities that Engage, Develop and Inspire Human Resources Professionals, so if you aren't on target please check out our resources to see how we can help.  Take a look at the discussion forum, attend a professional development event or consider peer coaching.  Those services were designed to help you achieve your goals.  We want to be a resource for the HR community and if you have any suggestions on how we can better accomplish this mission please reach out to me or anyone on the board.

Thank you for being part of the NHRC and I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming NHRC meeting or at the ILSHRM conference September 26th and 27th.

Certification...You may have recently receiving various mailings from SHRM reminding and offering instructions on how to enter credits for continuing education.

Also take a look at the NHRC website under the "Professional Certification" tab which has been updated with the SHRM and HRCI's website information.  Check out the NHRC calendar for classes being offered by local institutions for certification.

Professional Developmentprofl dev

The Professional Development Committee is gearing up for fall with fresh new initiatives for students and transitional members.  In addition to building and maintaining relationships with SHRM student chapters around the Midwest, we are committed to providing assistance to our own NHRC transitional members. This fall, we will be reaching out to those members to see what their needs are and how we can better assist them.  We are also always looking for volunteers to serve as mentors or peer coaches, and encourage your participation! Past volunteers with the mentor program enjoyed the experience and the wisdom they felt they provided to an up and coming HR professional.  If you're interested in volunteering as a mentor for students or as a peer coach please contact the Council Office.

Programs...Our next PDE, which will be held on September 8th from 8am-11:40am, will focus on Legal Updates: Critical Issues Employers Need to Know.  Attorney David Ritter will address a variety of topics, including the new overtime rules that become effective on December 1, 2016, independent contractor issues, transgender issues in the workplace, and what's new in the ADA and FMLA world.  Additional legal topics are currently being solicited from members and non-members on our distribution list.

Our year will conclude with informative PDEs on Performance Conversations (in October) and Social Media Recruiting (in November).

As we prepare for 2017, we need all board members to keep their ears and eyes open for good speakers and topics for PDEs or webinars and an additional committee member.  Please forward to Programs Co-Director, Naomi Sosa-Kestel.

Community Relations & Workforce Readiness...As part of the Community Relations and Workforce Readiness Committee our 2016 partnership is with the WINGS organization.  WINGS  is one of the largest domestic violence service and housing providers in the state of Illinois. Single women and women with children are able to receive temporary safe shelter through WINGS housing.  Staff provides one-on-one, individualized assistance that allows women to set personal goals that will enable them to work, continue their education, and care for themselves and their children.

WINGSPlease bring gently used coats to our October 13, 2016  PDE to donate to WINGS.

Additionally, we will be looking f
or volunteers to go to the WINGS distribution center in Elk Grove Village on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 to assist with organizing the many donations WINGS receives on a daily basis.  You can volunteer for 2,3 or 4 hours increments or the entire day beginning at 9:00 am.   And, colleagues from your respective companies can join you!

If you are interested in volunteering your time for this very important cause, please reach out to either Phil Perez-Vaughan at [email protected] or Karen Silverberg at [email protected].
