Our Mission is to Provide Resources and Opportunities

That Engage, Develop and Inspire Human Resource Professionals

April 2016

NHRC PresidentHappy Spring!  Although I have lived in Chicago my entire life I still have not gotten used to the winter (even relatively mild ones) and anxiously await the warmer and longer days.  Spring is often seen as a time of renewal.  The upcoming NHRC Forum is a perfect opportunity for you to spend a day to renew your commitment to your own professional development.  If you haven't already registered for the NHRC Annual Forum on May 5th, I encourage you to check out the lineup of fantastic speakers including key notes featuring Human Resources executives from the Chicago Cubs and Tribune Publishing along with dynamic and engaging session speakers.  We are looking forward to another great Forum and I hope to see you there.

The Society of Human Resources Management recently awarded the NHRC its prestigious Silver Award for our accomplishments in 2015.  The award is part of the SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence, which aligns individual chapters and councils with SHRM's goals. The award recognizes accomplishments and strategic activities and initiatives that enhance the human resources profession.  We are very proud of this achievement and thank you to the Board and Committee members that made this possible.

Best wishes for a wonderful spring.

Get Certified

Certification

As SHRM states "Because the HR profession is constantly changing and evolving, it is important for certified professionals to continually update their HR competencies and knowledge".  They further state "Recertifying demonstrates your commitment to the profession, to your organization, and to yourself through lifelong education and professional development".

Once certified, attending monthly NHRC meetings, the annual forum meeting, Illinois SHRM, and National SHRM, etc. give certification credits.  Check out SHRM's website for approved providers for credits.

For more information on SHRM certification, you may visit SHRM www.shrm.org.  For HRCI certification information, www.HRCI.org.

Professional Developmentprofl dev

The March NHRC professional development event provided insight into how to maximize your productivity by prioritizing tasks and working early in the day. Keeping a visual reminder of what you're doing directly in front of you so you can quickly return back to it if you get interrupted. Assign a specific block of time for routine tasks such as emails, but only after you've completed the higher priority tasks. Finally, remove all external distractions or move to a different location prior to starting work, and clear your mind before beginning your work to help reduce the risk of internal distractions.

Continual learning is significant for our professional development.  Plan on attending future professional development events for social engagement, improving knowledge and skills through exposure to new ideas and bringing back valuable information to apply at your workplace.

Not following us on social media? You can find the NHRC on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, or visit us online!

This is a great way to give back to community and an opportunity to meet and network with other NHRC members.  The volunteer work is sorting new and used clothes/items to be sold at the WINGS store.  All proceeds are used to support WINGS shelters, counseling and other services.

We will sponsor another volunteer day this Fall 2016.
