November 2015

President's Letter
As I write this letter fall is definitely in the air.  Hopefully there will some great days left to get outside and enjoy the beautiful fall colors before winter comes.

As the year comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our board and committee members for their hard work.  Their dedication and commitment is what allows the NHRC to fulfill our mission to Provide Resources and Opportunities That Engage, Develop and Inspire Human Resource Professionals.  As always, we welcome and encourage your feedback on how we can better meet your needs.

In preparation for 2016, I will be traveling to the SHRM Leadership Conference in Washington DC.  This event provides Chapter Presidents the opportunity to network with other volunteer leaders from across the country and discover best practices and challenges from other chapters.  This will be my second year attending and am excited to attend again.

Our final Professional Development Event for 2015 was November 12th on Finding the Hidden Gems. In addition, we voted in our new board members at that meeting along with hosting a food drive supporting the Northern Illinois Food Bank.  The best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

Chapter Updates

Certification...Attention all HRCI Certification Holders

Don’t wait until the last minute to certify for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification!  The SHRM website states the following:

“If you have a valid HR generalist certification (including: PHR, SPHR, GPHR, HRBP, HRMP and IPMA-CP*) which you obtained by January 31, 2015, you are eligible for SHRM's new certification—at no cost—by completing the following simple steps on line by December 31, 2015”

“Now your path to even greater opportunity is simple and clear. Your existing HR certification makes you eligible to earn the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP. Holding one of these certifications indicates to the global HR community that you have the competencies, knowledge and skills to perform effectively in today's ever-changing workplace”.

Please go to, and click on “Education and Certification” to get started.  Once you complete the pathway process, your 3 years recertification cycle begins. You will not lose or have to give up any of your current credentials in order to obtain the new SHRM certification.

Any questions you may contact SHRM at 1-800-283-SHRM (7476) or NHRC Certification Director, Denise Wydra at 847-227-6682

Professional Development...Beyond the Classroomleaf

It’s fall yet again which means beautiful leaves, cool temperatures and ushering students back to school. Fall also means the Professional Development Committee will be resuming SHRM student chapter visits at local colleges and universities! This year the schedule includes visits to Northern Illinois University and Roosevelt University, as well as planned meetings with Elmhurst College, Judson University and Harper College.

Visits to the local educational institutions help the NHRC build professional relationships with students as well as the faculty, as a way to engage them with what services we have to offer the up-and-coming HR professional. Along with encouraging participation in the Mentor Program, also included this year with student visits will be a Best Foot Forward review, which provides students with helpful tips for making those critical first impressions to employers. Best Foot Forward includes insightful information for students finding their first internships and positions, as well as professional advice when participating in phone screens and interviews, and concludes with a review of general office etiquette (for when they land that position). Students will also have the chance to create their own “elevator speech” to utilize during networking opportunities, to help them be prepared when faced with an impromptu opportunity to make a great impression.

The Professional Development Committee is always happy to accept volunteers for visits with local colleges and universities, or to serve as a mentor for the Mentor Program. For more information on SHRM student chapter visits or to volunteer as a mentor please contact Renee Mullaney at [email protected].

The NHRC Forum...We’re excited to announce that we have engaged two dynamic keynote speakers for our upcoming Forum, Blueprint for Success: Enhancing Your Talent, on May 5, 2016. Those keynote speakers will be Rachel O’Connell, the Assistant Director of Human Resources for the Chicago Cubs, and Cindy Ballard, the Senior Vice President of Human Resources for the Tribune, formerly SVP of 21st Century Fox. In addition, the Forum will include our very popular Legal Update, as well as two concurrent workshops.

We are looking for vendors and sponsors to be featured at our Forum. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Michael LoPresti at [email protected].

Legislative...Be sure and check our website for the most up to date information on legislative issues happening in Springfield that will have an impact on Human Resources.
