NHRC President Happy New Year to our current and future members!  I am very excited to be starting my second year as the NHRC President.  I truly enjoy the opportunity to meet and work with so many talented HR professionals.  

The NHRC board had our first meeting of the year and each committee discussed their strategic plan for the upcoming year. We seek to expand our membership, continue to offer valuable educational programs and advance our presence within our community.  I would also like to welcome our new board members: Linda Sala, Naomi Sosa-Kestel and Karen Silverberg.  We are very excited to have them as part of our team!

Our Programs Committee has been working hard on our 2015 Professional Development Events and members-only roundtables.  The next meeting will be on February 11th on The New Currency of Talent Engagement.  The Professional Development and Community Relations committees are developing opportunities to work more closely with students and within our community.  Mark your calendars for the NHRC Annual Forum on May 5th.  We have terrific speakers lined up including HR Professionals from the Cubs and The Tribune Company.  

I look forward to another great year with the NHRC and seeing you at an upcoming event.

Its a New Year!  If you currently are not certified in either SHRM or HRCI, please think Certification.  There are endless opportunities to have fun learning, and educating yourself along your career path.  Once certified, attending monthly NHRC meetings, the annual forum meeting, Illinois SHRM, and National SHRM, etc. give certification credits.  You will meet many colleagues in your field, and might even turn into long lasting friendships.

Workforce Readiness & Community Relations

Last June 2015, we surveyed our members to solicit your feedback on areas we should focus on in 2016.  Several of you mentioned interest in finding sources to recruit Veterans.

At the March 10, 2016 PDE, Debra Lawrence, Manager of Business Services and Marketing Communications with the Business and Career Services Inc. of Illinois will present a brief overview of their services and how employers can qualify for tax credits and OJT grant when you hire a Veteran.

Also, our committee is in the process of identifying a local community organization to sponsor for the year.  One of our goals is to engage our members to volunteer their time to a community organization in areas of:  donating business clothes, sorting clothes,  resume review, mock interviews, etc.  This is a great way to give back to our community and utilize the volunteer hours that several employers offer to their employees.
