January 2015

President's Letter
Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and now it’s back to business for all for us.  The New Year is a wonderful time to reflect on where we want to grow and improve over the upcoming year.  If professional development is one of your goals then the NHRC has many options for you.  Our monthly PDE’s, bi-monthly roundtables, mentor program and the online discussion forum offer great opportunities to network and enhance your skills.  We hope you are able to take advantage of these options.

The new SHRM certification is upon us and to help you learn more about this we have invited Martha Ramirez, SHRM’s Divisional Director for the Central region, to our February 12th PDE.  Martha will provide information about the certification and be available for questions.

The NHRC Board is busy organizing this year’s Forum.  We have great speakers already lined up and are working on the other details of the event.  It will again be held at Harper College in Roselle on April 30, 2015. It is going to be another great event so Save the Date now!

I would like to thank the NHRC Board members and volunteers that made 2014 such a successful year.  We were able to continue our long-standing tradition of providing quality events to our members and sponsorship opportunities to our vendor partners.  In addition, I want to welcome our three new board members; Cindy Lauing, Michael LoPresti and Drew Scheidenhelm.  We are excited to have you as part of our team.

I look forward to seeing you at our 2015 events.

Laura Mack, SPHR
NHRC President

Chapter Updates

Certification...SHRM Certification- New Programs starting January 1, 2015

As SHRM states on their website: “SHRM has always focused on making sure HR practitioners are seeking and attaining certification.  We are committed to ensuring that the certification our members achieve is recognized as best in class and distinguishes them in the marketplace.  SHRM understands the time and energy you've invested in obtaining your existent credentials and our goal is to make earning the new SHRM Certification as simple as is reasonably possible to ensure your continued success."

"If you are currently certified, you will not lose or have to give up any of your current credentials in order to obtain the new SHRM Certification. However, we do believe the new SHRM Certification will become the new standard for HR professionals around the globe, as it is among the first HR certifications that is focused on teaching and testing the practical, real-life information HR professionals need to excel in their careers today, including knowledge, skills and competencies”.

Please visit the SHRM website for details.

Professional Development...Building the Human Resources Community
NHRC MentorsIn order to share information about NHRC and the Mentor Program, this fall members of the Development Committee visited Roosevelt Universities Human Resources Graduate Program on September 13th, Northern Illinois University and Elmhurst College student chapter meetings on October 21st and November 20th.

During the meetings with the student, we reviewed the benefits of developing a professional relationship and becoming active in the Human Resources community, networking, career planning, answered questions and asked the students to participate in an activity where they could build an awesome company culture.  The Northern Illinois University students felt an awesome company culture would include autonomy, open communication and development opportunities.

We received two completed Mentor Program applications and we have paired these students with professional mentors.

With professionals and students working together, the Human Resources community shares knowledge and growth potential.
Scholarship...Please remember to submit your applications in advance!

Here some of the details of the program...

NHRC offers a scholarship program to assist human resources professionals investing in their human resources careers.  NHRC will offer $100 for reimbursement to professionals passing the exam (PHR, SPHR or GPHR) and earning certification or achieving re-certification.   The number of scholarships is dependent on the funds available.  Please see information on the NHRC website for more information regarding the specifics of the program.
