August 2015

President's Letter
I hope you are having a great summer this year and have had a chance to enjoy some of the wonderful things summer in Chicago has to offer.  I cannot believe it is August already and that summer will soon be winding down.  I think this time of year can be just as much of a time for renewal as January.  It is a good time to think back on our goals for the year and check-in on our progress.  If the year is slipping by for you, as it is for me, take this opportunity to think of one or two things you would like to accomplish yet this year and let’s make it happen!

The NHRC is here to help you meet your professional goals.  We have a fantastic line-up of speakers for our Professional Development Events and exciting Roundtables planned.  The Discussion Forum is also another great option if you need a little input from other HR Professionals.  ILSHRM’s annual conference is coming up September 14th and 15th in Tinley Park and promises to be another education filled two days.

We are always looking to improve the benefits we offer our members.  A survey was recently sent to NHRC members asking for your input on our monthly Professional Development Events.  If you haven’t already, please take a few minutes to complete the survey and earn your gift card incentive.  We sincerely appreciate your feedback.

I look forward to seeing you at our next Professional Development Event on September 10th.  Until then, enjoy these last days of summer.

Laura Mack, SPHR
NHRC President

Chapter Updates

Certification...Don’t forget to sign-up for the 16th Annual Illinois HR Conference & Exposition September 13-15, 2015. If you have been unable to join previously, this is a great opportunity for professional development, networking, and earning certification credits both for SHRM and HRCI.  The conference this year will be held at the fabulous Tinley Park Convention Center in Tinley Park.  Details and registration...

The NHRC Forum...That’s not theater, it’s the NHRC Forum!
Though seeing playbills and hearing piano show tunes may make you think you’re on Broadway, if you attended the NHRC Forum you may have been deceived!  Between engaging speakers, lively lunch time discussions (complete with a piano serenade), swanky black giveaway bags, and a host of supportive exhibitors and sponsors, this year’s festive theater atmosphere made attendees feel they were part of the show!

Stealing the spotlight were numerous speakers who covered topics like building your personal leadership brand, business trends impacting Human Resources, maximizing performance management, and a seven-step program to help your organization prevent lawsuits .
One of the added benefits of attending the Forum, or any NHRC professional development event, is not only taking in the knowledge the presenters bring but discussing what you’ve heard with fellow Human Resources professionals. Whether participation is encouraged during the sessions or networking and discussions take place after, being able to converse on the topics and find ways to apply them at your own business is one of the reasons why these sessions are so valuable.
This year the raffle was hugely successful due to the number of attendees who stayed to network and participate, and due to our generous sponsors. We received extremely positive feedback from our attendees on both the topics covered and the presenters.
We are already planning our next NHRC Forum for May 5, 2016. Want to get in on the planning?     Please contact Renee Mullaney at [email protected] for volunteer opportunities.

Legislative...Be sure and check our website for the most up to date information on legislative issues happening in Springfield that will have an impact on Human Resources.

Programs...Have you attended a conference or seminar where you saw a fantastic speaker who focused on HR or leadership topics that would appeal to our chapter?  Then throw a lead our way!  Send us a name and tell us the topic they spoke about and we’ll do the rest of the digging! Speakers are always being vetted for future Professional Development Events and conferences.
Send an email to board members Heather Ritter at [email protected] or Rachel Solarz at [email protected].
