From the President...

Happy New Year!

I am sure, if you make them, you have already prepared your New Year’s resolutions.  Some resolutions may be already broken however; there is still time to get back on track.  A new year presents an opportunity for us to improve on what exists today and make things better for tomorrow.  As 2012 approached, I reflected on the many people who are looking for work.  I contemplated on what additional things the NHRC community could do to help these people get back on track by returning to work.

While recent labor statistics report our unemployment rate is decreasing, we have NHRC members in Transition who are looking for assistance to find their next job opening.  Many of us know people who are in Transition and look for ways to help and support them.  We introduce people to others to expand their network, send referrals or pass resumes on to potential sources.  There is more than we can do.  If you are in Transition, I encourage you to post your resume on the NHRC Career Center.  If there is an HR job or project to complete within your organization, I encourage you to post the job opportunity on the NHRC Career Center.  If you are not in Transition nor have an HR opportunity within your organization, you can still support those in Transition by sharing the NHRC Career Center resource with your network.

Human Resource professionals are not the only people out of work seeking their next job opportunity.  At our January General Meeting, as NHRC president, I signed a Statement of Support for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).  As more of our military return from Iraq and Afghanistan, they will also need to transition back into the workforce and find jobs to support their families.  The HR community can support our returning military by providing resources such as resume reviews and interview preparation to aid in their job search.  NHRC has recently partnered with Veteran Services in the IL Department of Employment Services (IDES).  We will be offering our HR services to support their programs.  Watch for opportunities to make things better tomorrow for many returning veterans in the months to come.

Whether it is through networking, mentoring, job boards, online discussions, social media or support groups, make a New Year’s resolution to add NHRC to your list of resources.  Our volunteers are here to improve on what exists today and make things better for tomorrow.

Together, we can help people return to work in 2012!

Warm regards,
Sue Riffer

Chapter Updates

Certification...If you are thinking about becoming certified, visit the HR Certification Institute website (www.HRCI.org).  Learn about HR Certification and Recertification Tips (includes Get Recertified the low cost way).  This is a quote from HRCI:

HR Certification Sets You Apart...Earning HR Certification

  • makes your résumé stand out from other job applicants. One out of two recruiters prefer those with HR certification
  • earns recognition from your organization. Business leaders find HR certified professionals to be more self-motivated
  • connects you to an elite network of motivated HR professionals around the globe. More than 108,000 certified HR professionals work in more than 70 countries and territories

Any questions about certification, please visit the NHRC website, or contact Denise Wydra.

Communications...Are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer but have only a limited amount of time?  Are you looking to Network or maybe help other’s learn about educational opportunities?  We currently have volunteer opportunities that would take 5 minutes a week or even a month!  The communications committee continues to build NHRC’s presence in social media and we have plenty of ways that you can contribute on a busy schedule.   Interested?  Email Corrin Capeles. We are also excited to leverage our relationship with ILSHRM and work with other local SHRM affiliated chapters.

Community Relations...Home Of The Sparrow Coat Drive...Thank you all for a wonderfully successful Coat  drive for the Home Of The Sparrow.  We delivered 4 car loads to a few of the Thrift Shop locations.  The stores were very appreciative of our donations. We are proud to represent a great group of members and on behalf of the Home Of The Sparrow we want to say thank you!

We intend to continue giving back through various non-profit organizations throughout the year.  We will be back to you soon with another way to generously give back to those that are in need!

Membership Committee...The membership committee is in the process of organizing a Membership Orientation to coincide with our March 2012 general meeting.  This will be an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of being an NHRC member. This orientation will be open to anyone – new members, existing members that want a refresher on the benefits or potential members that would like to learn more about NHRC. You will be able to meet some of the board members and ask questions.  Watch for more details to follow in the upcoming month.

Program Committee...The Program Commitee is busy planning the general meetings for the first quarter of 2012.  On January 12, 2012 Michael Hahn from Beyond Good Teams presented "From Surviving to Thriving: Retain Your Key Talent Through the Recovery". Mark your calendars for our another general mession on February 9th (speaker details to be announced). On March 8th, Kathleen Caldwell from Caldwell Consulting Group will present Becoming a Strategic Human Resources Professional.

Survey Committee...Free critical current Human Resource information FREE!  By participating in the NHRC on line surveys members can contribute to and obtain the current information on human resources from other companies in your backyard.  Being able to defend your business presentations with facts from the local job market makes increasing the trust you generate from others on your team priceless.

One of the goals of the survey committee is to provide opportunities to compare your human resource environment with other businesses.  To meet that goal in December, NHRC published the Group Medical Plans for Nonexempt Employees.  As we begin to gain momentum into the new year, the Miscellaneous Policies and Practices is under study so that the survey can be delivered to the membership in February.  Some of the topics included in the survey are, Safety, Discipline, Rules/Employee Conduct, Casual Dress Policy, Percentage of Benefits to Payroll Costs, and Turnover rates.  Please look for the e-mail from us that will bring the chance to gain current data to your desktop.

Vendor Relations Committee...As a not-for-profit, our Vendor Partners play a critical role in NHRC’s mission to provide information and resources that complement the needs of our members. NHRC offers a variety of opportunities for Vendor Partners to showcase their strategies and solutions and to engage our network of HR Professionals. Budget-friendly options include Event Sponsorship, Website  Advertising and Newsletter Sponsorship. Click here to learn more...

Planning is well underway for our Annual Forum. We are pleased to announce this year’s Forum Sponsorship Opportunities. Click here for the complete menu.  Act fast! This is one event you don’t want to miss!
